The legal principle
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
Why it matters
Housing affects school access, commuting, safety, wealth-building, healthcare access, and neighborhood opportunity. Unfair treatment in housing can therefore affect much more than where someone sleeps.
What justice should require
Housing decisions should be based on lawful, relevant criteria—not prejudice. Rules and terms should be transparent, consistent, and open to review when discrimination is alleged.
